With the close of our online survey, and to commemorate LGBT+ History Month, we are hosting an informal round table for members of the LGBTQIA+ community who study or work in architecture in Scotland.

As part of Open Plan Scotland’s launch in May 2023, we undertook an online survey to understand the experiences, needs and expectations of members of the LGBTQIA+ community who study or work in architecture in Scotland. The survey remained open across our series of events in 2023, including our Pride meet-ups and winter social, and along with the enthusiasm and help of our own community, was shared with the support of a number of industry institutions, collectives and networks.

On the 5th February 2024, we closed the online survey, feeling that we have received a strong body of responses, and that it’s now time to take the first steps of turning them into actions.

We want our response to the survey findings to be open and collaborative; the round table event will be a chance for members of our community to come together, discuss the findings along with wider experiences or ideas, and help us form a path forward for 2024 and beyond. We began Open Plan with an outline manifesto, with the intention to revisit this once we better understood the needs and expectations of our community. This is perfect timing for LGBT+ History Month, which is itself a time to share stories and visions for the future.

The event will be casual, and we will circulate the survey findings prior so that all attending feel prepared to join the conversation. However, there will be no expectation to speak up if you’ve come along to just listen and meet some new or familiar faces!

The event will be BYO for drinks, with time to socialise before (and perhaps after!).

Importantly, we ask that only members of the LGBTQIA+ community attend this event. It is vital that we provide a safe space for those attending to openly voice their thoughts, particularly for those that may require additional discretion. We appreciate the support and engagement of our allies in the industry, and we will be sharing the survey results publicly, along with our actions and response for all to see in due course.
